California Introduces Candid Camera “Cops”

Adopting the slogan “Pictures Don’t Lie,” the Police Department of Beverly Hills, Calif., has equipped its motorcycle and radio car officers with candid cameras, as shown at right. It is pointed out that the policemen will collect pictorial records of traffic violations to refresh the memories of careless drivers when they are hailed into court. The cameras will also be used by the officers to take pictures at the scene of a crime for use with court testimony.

Chimpanzee Plugs in and Gives Wrong Numbers on Zoo Switchboard

DICK, one of the chimpanzee residents of the Luna Park Zoo in Los Angeles, California, paid a call to the zoo office the other day and while there he made friends with the telephone operator. When invited to try out the switchboard, Dick pushed and pulled plugs, particularly enjoying using the plugs when a light flashed on the board. He dispensed wrong numbers with carefree abandon and gibbered back at irate phone users who tried to “bawl him out” for his carelessness. “Indestructible” Plane Built (Dec, 1937)

“Indestructible” Plane Built

FEATURING construction that makes it practically indestructible by machine gun fire from other aircraft, a “convoy fighter” airplane has been developed by the Seversky Aircraft Corp., of Farmingdale, L. I. The all-metal construction is such that the stresses of flight are spread over the entire wing and no single beam carries a critical load. The wings can be literally riddled with bullets and the plane can still maintain flight.

The new plane is powered by an 1100-horsepower, twin-row radial engine and is said to be capable of traveling 300 m.p.h. Armament consists of five machine guns and wing racks for carrying 300 pounds of demolition bombs.

The plane is believed to be the most versatile ever constructed for military use. It can be used as a light bomber, an observation plane, a pursuit plane, an attack plane, or as an advanced trainer.
