Believe It or Not! by Ripley

Striking and little known facts that challenge belief.

Anyone doubting the truth of the statements may obtain proof by writing to Robert L. Ripley, in care of Modern Mechanics and Inventions, 529 So. 7th St., Minneapolis, enclosing a stamped envelope. Each month Bob Ripley presents to Modern Mechanics and Inventions readers two pages of drawings illustrating amazing, curious and little known facts gathered from all parts of the world. If you are of a scientific cast of mind, you will undoubtedly find Ripley’s discoveries especially interesting, as they are unearthed largely in the field of science. Though they seem incredible, Ripley can prove the statements to your satisfaction.

I DON’T BELIEVE IT! Nah, I’m only kidding, actually I’ve got a book full of his cartoons, really good stuff. And he was rught about Alcock and Brown.

Ripley had a way of making the simple look exciting….

I got the 25th Series album in Denmark in 1978 (it was one of the few English language books my mother could find for us children) and am sorry we ever gave it away. It was full of remarkable things. However, he has to be wrong about the people aged 153 and 200. Guinness Superlatives have done a lot of research into longevity records and state that there is nothing about which humans tell more lies. Nobody is reliably known to have reached 130.

And here’s a Believe It Or Not for you of my own. Did you know Charles “Peanuts” Schulz first had a drawing published in Believe It Or Not? “A dog that eats pins, tacks and razor blades is owned by C. F. Schulz of [whatever the address was, I forget].” The accompanying picture of the dog was drawn by “Sparky” himself. Not surprisingly, he looked a lot like Snoopy – or rather, Snoopy looked a lot like him.

Maybe even I have something for “Believe it or Not”! It may not make ice, ‘but it won’t leave you out in the cold’ aether!! One of the BEST books, I read, growing up on Cape Cod. Then moving to Saint Augustine, Florida to only live nearby your museum!

Billy S.: Whose museum? Who do you think runs this blog? You do realize that Ripley is dead?

  7. John says: April 14, 20114:50 pm

Stephen: Here it is from 1937…

The address was St Paul, MN

John: That is SO great! Any problems if I share that link on a few comics related sites?

  9. John says: April 14, 20116:57 pm

Toronto: Not my blog so feel free. We still have to have that beer together.
