CAMERA STUDIES BY SELF-STYLED SONS OF HEAVEN (Aug, 1945)

Wow, this is just about the most grim camera ad I’ve ever seen.

CAMERA STUDIES BY SELF-STYLED SONS OF HEAVEN

“American prisoners carry their wounded in blankets on death march from Bataan. Practical Japanese give wounded comrades hand grenades for honorable suicide.”

“Chinese captive granted extra moment of life, but only while noble son of Nippon holds heroic pose for snapshot to delight honorable folks back home.”

Photography is our business, but we’re working hard to hasten the day when it will be impossible to take photographs-like those above. Making high-precision optical instruments for the Army and Navy is our full-time job—until the time when people everywhere can be photographed, without heartbreak and without shame.

Every War Bond you buy means another blank page in the photo album of barbarian atrocities

Universal Camera Corp. was something of an ‘also-ran’ in the camera industry. Their Mercury line of cameras were probably the most interesting. Towards the end they were pretty much in the novelty camera business.
This is an interesting ad to sell war bonds, but frankly I don’t think I would want my camera products to be tied to these images.

Given what Japanese soldiers were up to in places like Nanking, I hardly think we should be making a fuss over unkind words being directed towards Japan while the war was raging.
