CARVING beautiful novelties from lumps of coal is the unique business engaged in by Charles H. Cunningham, of Summit Hill, Pa. Two of his carvings—a fireman’s trumpet and a football—are shown in the photo at right.

    I am planning to have my sculpture students carve out of West Virginia coal. Do you have any suggestions on what types of tools they should be using? We have sculpture tools to carve wood and stone would they be ok to use?
