Can it be “tommyrot” when such people advocate Pelmanism?

Here are only a few of many famous men and women who advocate Pelmanism, and who use its principles themselves. With this testimony before you, can you doubt that it will benefit you ? Find out what Pelmanism has already done for over 650,000 people—send for a copy of the free book illustrated below.

NO doubt you have often heard of Pelmanism, but probably you have carelessly thought of it as “just another new-fangled movement. Some more tommyrot! The usual mental-pep stuff!”

Can it, however, be “tommyrot,” when such people as those pictured here, men and women of the highest intelligence and distinction—prominent statesmen, artists, novelists, jurists, business men, military men, publicists—advocate Pelmanism in the most enthusiastic terms?

Pelmanism has spread, with the force of a religious movement, all over the world. There is no secret as to how it performs its seeming miracles of regeneration among discouraged people. It takes the principles of Applied Psychology, simplifies them so that they can be understood by everybody, and then arranges them into a remarkable system of mental training.

The results of this system are sometimes almost unbelievable. It helps its users in the most practical way. It changes their outlook upon life; it changes their circumstances. They begin to accomplish things they had heretofore only dreamed of. They do more, earn more. Instances are on record (on file and open to inspection), where income has increased 800, 900, and 1,000 per cent. Yet, remarkable though they may seem, these results can be simply explained.

. Be honest with yourself. You know in your heart that you have failed, failed miserably, to attain what you once dreamed of. Was that fine ambition unattainable? Or was there just something wrong with you? Analyze yourself, and you will see that at bottom there was a weakness somewhere in you.

What was the matter with you? Find out by means of Pelmanism; then develop the particular mental faculty that you lack. You CAN develop it easily; Pelmanism will show you just how; 650,000 Pelmanists, many of whom were held back by your very problem, will tell you that this is true.

The whole remarkable story of Pelmanism is told in a little book, “Scientific Mind-Training.” It explains in detail the simple principles; it tells stories—almost unbelievable, some of them— of people whose lives and circumstances have been revolutionized after a short time.

We will gladly send this book to you, free, if you are at all interested in Pelmanism. To ask for it involves you in no obligation whatsoever; you will not be bothered; no salesman will call on you. Send for this book now; when such distinguished people as those shown here advise you to take up Pelmanism; how can you justify yourself if you do not try to find out, at least, whether Pelmanism can help you “find yourself.” Mail the coupon below—now, before you forget about it.

Sixty billion vibrations per second

A great new giant of communications—a waveguide system for carrying hundreds of thousands of voices at once, as well as television programs —is being investigated at Bell Telephone Laboratories.

Such a revolutionary system calls for frequencies much higher than any now used in communications. These are provided by a reflex klystron tube that oscillates at 60,000 megacycles, and produces waves only 5 mm. long.

The resonant cavity that determines the frequency is smaller than a pin-head. The grid through which the energizing electron beam is projected is only seven times as wide as a human hair, and the grid “wires” are of tungsten ribbon 3/10,000 inch in width. G. K. Farney, University of Kentucky Ph. D. in nuclear physics, is one of the men who successfully executed the development of the klystron. Dr. Farney is a member of a team of Bell scientists whose exciting goal is to harness the immense bandwidth that is available with millimeter waves . . . and to make certain that your telephone system remains the best in the world.

J-M ASBESTOS SHINGLES ARE EVERLASTING AND ECONOMICAL

YOU can truthfully call your roof everlasting if it is made of Johns-Manville Rigid Asbestos Shingles. Unburnable Asbestos and Portland Cement are blended under terrific pressure into rigid monolithic stone shingles.

These sturdy Shingles can never wear out—they never burn, rot, rust or warp, and their beautiful colors are as lasting as Asbestos itself.

Tests Prove Age Adds StrengthThe only effect of weather on J-M Asbestos Shingles is to make them harder and stronger. Actual tests such as those recently made by the Southern Testing Laboratories at Jacksonville, Florida, prove that 16-year-old J-M Asbestos Shingles are actually 10% stronger today than when they were laid on the roof!

Fireproof Beauty for All TimeThe right roof in color, texture and design will add enduring charm to any home. The wrong roof mars its beauty and decreases its value.

The wide range of colors, styles and textures offered by J-M Asbestos Shingles have been designed under the direction of a committee of prominent architects to insure an amazing number of color combinations, all in good taste, to meet the diverse demands of any type of house and every budget.

Write for a Free EstimateLet us show you how little it will cost to roof your house for the last time with J-M Asbestos Shingles.

Just fill out the coupon and mail it to the nearest office listed below— our local representative will gladly make a free inspection of your roof and furnish a free estimate to you without obligation.

EVEN as late as 1900, only one American home in every seven had a bathtub; one in 13 had a telephone; one home in 30 had electric lights. There were only 8000 automobiles. Manufactured products were scarce and expensive.

Today there are 20 million bathtubs, 18 million telephones, 22 million wired homes, 25, million automobiles, and millions of other manufactured prod-ucts which were unheard of in 1900 but are now plentiful and sell at a fraction of their former cost.

General Electric scientists and engineers, by applying electrical methods to the tasks of industry, have helped to provide us with the many products that contribute to our comfort and convenience, and to the hundreds of services which we enjoy today.

Here by your bedside, warm and glowing, is the Sun itself

Snap the switch and you have wrought a miracle. Out of winter’s darkness springs summer sunshine, glowing with all the warmth and vitality of June.

Only a lamp, you may say, but a lamp that is one of the triumphs of modern science, because it is in reality a miniature sun duplicating the essential rays which have made sunlight the source of life and energy for all mankind.

Turn on this light and expose your body to it. What is the result? First of all it will develop a healthy summer tan. But the real benefits are far deeper. The tide of health rises with the sun in summer, and the light of this Eveready Sunshine Lamp exercises a similar vitalizing influence that brings renewed strength and builds up resistance against illness. It is soothing to the nerves. It induces sound and restful sleep. It does for you what clear summer sunshine will do because it is exactly the same in all essentials. Reporting on tests of carbon arc light such as this, the U. S. Bureau of Standards said: “Of all the artificial illuminants tested, it is the nearest approach to sunlight.”

Not only does this light have all the vital rays of the sun (ultra-violet, infra-red and visible light rays), but it has them in the same proportion as natural sunlight, which scientists agree is a most important requirement.

Because it is simply sunlight, the Eveready Sunshine Lamp burning Eveready Sunshine Carbons may be used with beneficial results by anyone who is not actually ill. It is particularly valuable to growing children and to adults who wish to avoid physical depression. In case of illness your physician should be consulted before using any light treatment.

A very interesting booklet, “Making the Summer Sun Stand Still,” will be mailed free to anyone who is interested. Write to NATIONAL CARBON COMPANY, Inc.

Your essential controls are right on the microphone, under your thumb. And they’re all touchbuttons. The closest thing yet to automation in dictation, this astonishingly automatic new TIME-MASTER is the most expensive machine in the world—to be without.

You can find your place at a glance . . . easily spot parts you want to play back, because the Dictabelt record lets you see recording take place. Nothing’s hidden. What’s more, Dicta-belts can not be erased by accident. You never waste time re-thinking, re-recording.

But you really have to see and try this wonderfully obliging machine to believe it. Call your local Dictaphone office for a free demonstration. Then use it and see for yourself how much time and effort—and that means good cold, hard, folding cash—you’ll save.

We dug and refilled a 4000-mile trench to protect 9300 communications circuits against disaster

We split the continent with a trench four feet deep to give the United States its first blast-resistant coast-to-coast underground communications cable system.

More than four years ago when the first of 2500 giant reels of coaxial cable, started unrolling in New York State, we began an important project that will give added protection to the nation’s vital communications.

Today, 9300 circuits—available for voice, data, teletypewriter, telephoto—are included on this route. It stretches across 19 states and has 950 buried reinforced concrete repeater (or amplifying) stations.

Spotted strategically along the route about 50 feet below ground level are 11 manned test centers. Also of reinforced concrete, they have automatic air filtration and ventilation and living quarters stocked with emergency food and water.

This vital transcontinental link will serve the needs of government agencies, businesses and individuals.

This is a job that needed the Bell System’s unified research, manufacturing and operating capabilities. It is another implementation of a basic Bell System policy: “In communications, the defense of the nation comes first.”

Why Billy C. was benched

There he sat on the sidelines . . . all through football days. With the finest new football outfit in the neighborhood .. . with everything but a place on the eleven.

Baffled and hurt as only a twelve-year-old can be he tried desperately. But fumbled the ball. Couldn’t keep up with plays. Just couldn’t make the grade.

Then Billy’s family physician took a hand. Suspicious, he sent Billy to the dentist. The X-ray of Billy’s teeth told the story . . . showed two teeth too far gone to save and another one going . .. and showed what was making the boy a fumbler!

Every doctor and dentist knows what will happen if tooth decay is not discovered and checked . . . how the poisoning action will sap strength and mental energy… even lead into grave and dangerous ills.

That’s why they insist on a definite program of care for your teeth … like the Squibb Plan, below.

Because most tooth decay can be prevented … by proper diet, regular dental care, and daily brushing and massage.

There are two scientific dentifrices that make this program most effective: Squibb Dental Cream and Squibb Tooth Powder. They do more than clean your teeth. Both contain an antacid to neutralize the bacterial acids which cause decay, wherever it comes in contact with them.

Choose whichever form you like, paste or powder .. . you’ll find Squibb the most refreshing dentifrice you have ever used . . . and children love the special, pleasing “flavor.”

One of the finest things you will ever do for your family is to start them on this Squibb Plan now!

BE SURE TO GET SQUIBB QUALITY Squibb makes hundreds of drug products. When buying any home necessities, be sure to ask if Squibb makes it.

squibb tooth powder—it has all the scientific advantages of Squibb Dental Cream . . . for those who prefer powder

squibb mineral oil—a safe internal regulator.

New Advertising Medium Displays Real Goods

LOS ANGELES is the home of many unique advertising attractions. One of its more enterprising concerns conceived the idea of a sign board that would be an architectural beauty. It was to take the form of a picture frame with the subject acting as the picture. A large wood frame was erected, plate glass fitted and the sign was ready.

A beautiful roadster was placed on the platform behind the window. The backdrop was painted so as to give the car a proper setting, the colored lights were adjusted and the picture was completed. The new picture-sign board has been declared the acme of out-door advertising.

New Bell Solar Battery Converts Sun’s Rays Into Electricity

Bell Telephone Laboratories demonstrate new device for using power from the sun.

Great and kindly is the sun. Each day it bathes the earth in light, bringing life to everything on earth.

Scientists have long reached for the secret of the sun. For they have known that it sends us nearly as much energy daily as is contained in all known reserves of coal, oil and uranium.

If this energy could be put to use there would be enough to turn every wheel and light every lamp that mankind would ever need.

Now the dream of the ages is closer to realization. For out of the Bell Telephone Laboratories has come the Bell Solar Battery—a device to convert energy from the sun directly and efficiently into usable amounts of electricity.

Though much development remains to be done, this new battery gives a glimpse of future progress in many fields. Its use with transistors (also invented at Bell Laboratories) offers far-reaching opportunities for improvements and economies in telephone service.

A small Bell Solar Battery has shown that it can send voices over telephone wires and operate low-power radio transmitters. Made to cover a square yard, it can deliver enough power from the sun to light an ordinary reading lamp.

Great benefits for telephone users and for all mankind will come from this forward step in harnessing the limitless power of the sun.

Core memory doubled to 40,000 characters! Magnetic tape capability increased to twelve or more 66,000 character/second tape units! System rentals remain low, and you can still begin on a small scale!

Already widely accepted by business and government, the RCA 301 has been so stepped up in workpower that the running time for many jobs has been cut in half. Now it can also tackle much larger and more complex jobs, and can be greatly extended in capacity as your work load grows. With the advanced 301 you have a wider choice of system configuration—and therefore, a better match to your job—than with any other system in its price range. And when you buy 301, you are buying top productivity per rental dollar for your overall needs.

Be sure you evaluate this advanced RCA 301 for your data processing needs. Or if you already have an RCA 301 system, add the new memory and high performance tape units as you require them. No reprogramming is necessary.

These new 301 advances are the latest in RCA’s continuing program of bringing you higher levels of EDP efficiency through the application of the world’s newest electronic techniques.

RCA 301 rental prices begin under $3000 per month, and delivery can be made in less than a year. Contact your local RCA EDP representative, or write: RCA Electronic Data Processing, Camden 8, New Jersey.

NEW RCA 301 SPECIFICATIONS:
Random Access: Data Record File, 27 million char. capacity
Data Disc File, 176 million char. capacity

Foods that build health can be Palate-Tempting

RECIPES that actually make your mouth water may now be made from the most healthful of health foods!

At Battle Creek, diet specialists have given attention to the taste and flavor as well as to health. Meatless dishes abounding in strength-giving qualities now rival choicest beef and chicken. Cereals that have a tang of parched wheat or a crunchy crispness call for second helpings. A food drink, rich as milk, makes the most delicious ice cream and salad garnish.

Particularly interesting is Savita. Aside from being one of the richest known sources of Vitamin B, a remarkable blood and nerve-building food, this yeast extract is a boon to every cook.

Savita duplicates the wonderful flavor of chicken, mushrooms and choicest beef. It is ready for instant use for broths, bouillons and soups, sauces, gravies and sandwiches. For years it has been used at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

Together with the other health foods in the Battle Creek line, Savita is sold by your Health Food Center—usually the leading grocer.

SAVITA — Yeast extract rivaling finest meat flavor.

FIG BRAN — A dainty cereal of bran and luscious figs.

PARAMELS — Creamy caramels of mineral oil.

LAXA — Crunchy biscuits of bran and agar.

MALTED NUTS — Delicious food drink teeming with health.

VITA-WHEAT — Appetizing all-wheat 6-minute porridge.

“ZO” — Toothsome vitamin cereal everyone enjoys. LACTO-DEXTRIN —Refreshing anti-toxic colon food.

PROTOSE — Vegetable meat rich as choicest beef.

BRAN BISCUIT — Crisp, tasty, whole-somebran crackers. PSYLLA—Seeds that supply bulk and lubrication.

Free Diet Service

At Battle Creek we maintain a staff of graduate dietitians to advise you on any diet problem, if you will write to Ida Jean Kain, our chief dietitian, she will send you suggestions for your particular diet. “Healthful Living,” a most interesting and helpful book written by a leading nutrition expert, will be sent free if you write your name and address on the margin of this ad and send it to us. It describes with recipes many of the foods used in the Battle Creek Diet System.

2. No longer need the driver sit rigidly in one position. Just touch a lever and change the angle of the seat back. Tall men say it’s the greatest idea yet for comfort on long drives.

Nothing you want to watch on TV? Watch something better.

There’s always something great on the RCA VideoDisc System.

Now when there’s nothing good to watch on TV, it’s easy to see something great. Like your favorite movie, your child’s favorite show, a tennis lesson, or a great concert. The fact is, the great catalog of RCA VideoDiscs contains more than 130 great movies, classics, concerts or shows. And there are lots more on the way.

Best of all, RCA VideoDiscs start as low as $14.98* Or about a third the cost of prerecorded video tape?

But the best reason to consider the RCA VideoDisc System is the RCA VideoDisc Player. A remarkably simple machine that plays your RCA Video-Discs on your own TV.

It’s simple to hook up. As simple as a record player to operate. And built with all the technical know-how of the leader in consumer video electronics.

Best of all, the RCA VideoDisc Player lists at less than $500*

So see your RCA dealer for a demonstration of the RCA VideoDisc Player and VideoDiscs. And bring the magic home.

Three-Dimensional Showman

Here’s Charles McArthur, the man who’s responsible for an entirely novel idea in display advertising— “signs that live.”

By Roland Cueva

IN New York’s Grand Central Terminal a good-looking, gray-haired man stared intently at a big advertising sign on the station wall. The bright-colored sign was not flat like a poster, but had three-dimensional depth and was set in a frame like a marionette show.

A crowd soon surrounded the ad gazer and began gaping at the sign, too. The man listened to their exclamations and comments with interest, for he was engaged in his favorite pastime—studying his own signs and getting the public reaction to them first-hand.

The name of the ad-gazing adman is Charles H. McArthur, a 59-year-old native of Chicago. He has created what he firmly believes is the first really original advertising medium since the invention of the radio. His belief in his own brainchild is borne out by the phenomenal success of the new signs. In less than two years his three-dimensional displays have made a million-dollar hit by virtually turning big, dreary depots into colorful art galleries. He’s getting ready now to put his show on the road. Soon his novel 3-D’s will be brightening up not only the ads but also the weary traveler in every railroad station in the country.
