Constipation Made Husband Draggy (Nov, 1936)
Just out of curiosity, what would be an example of a laxative that is habit forming?
Constipation Made Husband Draggy
HE just didn’t feel like work or play. Always draggy and worn out—often cross and irritable. But like so many women, his wife knew about Nature’s Remedy (NR Tablets). She put him wise. He found out what an astonishing difference there was in this purely vegetable laxative. Not merely partial relief. Instead thorough, cleansing action that aided in ridding his system of poisonous waste, refreshed him, made him feel like a “million.” Try NR Tablets yourself. Note how gentle they are and non-habit forming. 25 tablets —25 cents at any

Phenolphthalein. It doesn’t cause a physical addiction like a morphine addiction, but it can cause rebound constipation – which prompts the user to take a higher dose and become dependent on it for regular movements.
Thanks for the info.
Her husband was feeling ‘draggy’?
Just hide his high heels and make-up until it passes.
Thanks, folks. I’ll be here til Friday.
Be sure to try the veal and tip your waiters.
Also: heroin. (Haven’t you ever seen Trainspotting?)
I thought that heroin makes you constipated. It’s only when you STOP taking it that you have to go to the bathroom.
Heroin indeed makes you constipated, as do all opiates. This is sometimes quite handy, since (at least here) Tylenol No. 1 is OTC and very cheap compared to Metamucil.
Sorry to break it to you Blurgle, but the active ingredients in Nature’s Remedy (NR, get it?) were Cascara Sagrada and Aloe. This specific formulation was banned for OTC laxatives by the FDA in 1992.

If you don’t know, don’t guess…
Firebrand, please read what I wrote. Phenolphthalein was the habit-forming ingredient NR **DID NOT** contain, which is why they could advertise that NR wasn’t habit-forming.
There’s no harm in misunderstanding what someone writes, but it’s awfully rude to arrogantly tell someone “if you don’t know, don’t guess”. I wasn’t guessing; I knew. You simply didn’t understand what I wrote and jumped to the assumption that I must be stupid.
The ad seems to encourage wive to sneak laxatives to their husbands.
The problem is I did read what you wrote. Did you? Let’s review shall we… I saw one word, Phenolphthalein. Followed by possible side effects. Sorry my psychic abilities failed me about then and I missed the whole thing about how you were actually referring to an ingredient that it didn’t contain.
FB: The text of my post was a question: “Just out of curiosity, what would be an example of a laxative that is habit forming?”
Since Blurgle’s comment was the name of a laxative followed by the reasons it is habit forming I assumed she was just answering my question. I suppose she could have said “Charlie, the answer to your question is:”, but I understood what she meant.
Yes it’s all clear to me now. Blurgle was answering your question (which I hadn’t noticed). I’ll try to use my powers for good rather than evil from now on.
