Dummy Motorbike Teaches Safety (Oct, 1933)

This is what it looks like when you get run over in toon town.

Dummy Motorbike Teaches Safety

RAILWAY workers on English roads get thorough training in First Aid. Below are seen two railroad men practicing rescue work. The “victim” is pretending he has been knocked off his motorbike, while the engineer is treating him for injuries. Feature of this episode is cardboard motorbike.

I can’t imagine why there is a need for a cardboard motorbike for this. The “victim” is pretending he’s injured so why can’t he pretend there’s a motorbike or anything else lying on him?

Heck, I participated in a fake plane crash once, and they brought in a section of 12′ culvert to act as a piece of fuselage. And there was fake blood, fake broken arms – all sorts of things. I had a “head injury” (which explains a lot.)

Perhaps the trainees are sent in knowing nothing about what kind of “emergency” they’re dealing with, and the prop motorbike gives them a clue as to what happened and what kind of “injuries” are likely.

Yeah, it never ends as far as second guessing goes. If the “victim” was told to lie there and pretend there was a motorcycle on him and the aid-givers were told before going in to imagine he’s under a motorcycle, folks would be ingeniously asking why they couldn’t come up with a prop motorcycle to get everyone in the mood?

FB: That reminds me of an old joke.

The Lieutenant is checking the sentries, and asking them about hypothetical situations. He asks one “What would you do if I came steaming up the road in a battleship?”

“I’d torpedo it, Sir” said the sentry.

“And where the hell would you get a torpedo, soldier?”

“Same place you got the battleship, Sir.”

Sometimes pretending too much gets in the way.

Toronto: We really need to have that beer.
