It always amazes me on the number of solutions for smokers; whether it is to allow them to smoke in the rain or to keep tabs on the number of smokes given to friends or this one on lighting pipes. Just don’t smoke. All smoking related problems are no longer problems, you save money not to mention have better health. Easy :)

Easy to say a half-century on. Post-WWII, smoking was universal. We forget this: UNIVERSAL. Soldiers were given cigarettes for use in the field; nicotine steadied the nerves and sharpened the reflexes — useful things in a war. Not giving cigs to the troops was nearly tantamount to treason. So a generation was hooked, and smoking was American and patriotic. The long-term health effects of breathing smoke didn’t become apparent until decades later — when a generation of chain-smokers started dropping of cancer, it couldn’t be ignored.

@ Bill Thompson – Actually there was quite an anti-smoking campaign in Nazi Germany (Der Furher didn’t like the coffin nails) and a lot of research was done showing the health effects of smoking, including cancer, but after WWII, this data was discarded and people not rediscovered until the 60′s.
