IF YOU CAN’T PARK IT CARRY IT!

THIS very small car may qualify better, to some minds, as a scooter with a body, or perhaps as a deficient power mower. You steer it with a handlebar and you start it by pulling a cord. “It roars into life with a pull of a cord,” is the way our London informant puts it—and from now on we greet anything he tells us with hurt distrust. It’s called the Brutsch Mopetta, it has three wheels, costs $560 and has a top speed of 21 mph. Its obvious role is in home-to-station and city driving.

Just give it an engine that burns methyl (wood) alcohol, so it can use biofuels that don’t compete with food (as originally proposed by Robert Zubrin) and this kind of vehicle would help address the issue of energy independence and global warming, as well as traffic congestion.

Of course, somewhat larger versions which allow for transporting people who can’t drive themselves would also be needed, as would changed traffic regulations combined with stricter enforcement to ensure adequate safety on the roads for smaller vehicles like this.

    There’s actually a web page

    http://microcarmuseum.c…

about the vehicle, which notes that only 14 of them were ever built.

This reminds me of the Reliant Robin.

    Knees as crumple zone?
