LUGGAGE RACK for Volkswagen (Feb, 1957)
LUGGAGE RACK for Volkswagen was recently exhibited at a Fall Fair in Frankfurt Germany. Easily attached to car in a few minutes, trunk costs about $65, is 110 lbs.
FLIPPED sideways, rack allows VW owner easy access to engine. Device is made by Kurt Maruitz firm in Duesseldorf to fill long-felt need on little autos.
Hmmm… Not sure about adding 110 pounds plus luggage to an already back heavy car.
I can see the logic of this vs the traditional clamped-to-the-gutters roof rack (which made gas mileage sag) but 110 lbs? Are we sure that’s not the lawyer-approved carrying capacity?
Also, it may get a bit hot. (I’ve scrambled eggs over an engine*, but doubt you could do a good job of something like pizza or chicken, so the ‘cook while delivering’ option is out.)
* A diesel. At sea. Ketchup covers many sins.
