Lots of Wheels With VW Push
WITH 16 of its 20 wheels powered, the 2200-lb. Nobel-Amphibil travels quickly over ditches, rocks, mud, snow, or ice— through clinging undergrowth, swamps, and swift streams, according to York Nobel Group, Ltd., London, which holds world production and sales rights.
The twin front wheels on each side are un-powered; they absorb road shocks and help guide the vehicle on steep slopes. The prototype Amphibil shown here, during tests in Norway, averaged close to 40 mpg. It’s driven by an air-cooled Volkswagen engine at up to 40 mph. The one-piece fiber glass body will hold six passengers or four passengers and about 440 lbs. of luggage. Wholesale factory price is expected to be $2,250.
THIS BOAT IS A CAR!
IT’S a boat! It’s a car! It does everything but fly! In fact, it’s Amphicar, a West German import that looks like a jazzy convertible and, when driven off the road into a lake or river, becomes an efficient motorboat.
The car’s water-tight body is 15-1/2 ft. long, has a wheelbase of 80 in. and weighs 1,738 lbs. Fuel consumption is said to be 32 mpg on land and two gallons per hour on the water. The Austin four-cylinder engine is water-cooled.
For on-water drive, a switch lever operates two stern propellers at forward or reverse speed.
Recommended for fishermen and outdoor sportsmen, the Amphicar will sell in the U. S. for under $3,000. •
Amphicar Travels on Water or Land
PART boat and part car, this German import recently made its American debut. Dubbed the Amphicar, it has a self-supporting floating bodyâ€”162 in. long overall, on an 80-in. wheelbase.
Its 4-cylinder 39-hp motor is water cooled and has four fully synchronized forward speeds and one reverse for on-land operation. For on-water drive, a switch operates twin propellers in the rear at forward or reverse speed.
The manufacturer says it will give 32 mpg on land and use about 2 gals, per hour on the water. The importer is Amphicar Corporation of America, New York, N. Y.
