I didn’t know that 3M made copy machines!I wonder if they still do.
They were big from the 50s to the 80s. Now they are mostly used by tatoo artist to make stencils.
Just another printing technology, thermal, as opposed to xerography (laser) and ink jet. Thermal however is limited to the types of paper it can use.

They weren’t very permanent. The process is similar to the thermoprinting of many store receipts and older fax machines. They fade fast over time and will blacken with heat.
