Hair Raising Electric Chair
ONE of the features of a recent engineering show held in Portland, Oregon, was the electric chair shown here, in which a man was seated while an electric charge of 150,000 volts was passed through his body. The experience left the shockee with no ill effects, although the picture shows his hair to be standing on end; but even the prospect of such a shock would be enough to cause this.

Well, they got one thing right. It certainly does look thrilling.

New Ice-cycle Gives Cycling Thrills on Lakes in Winter

THE bicycle craze has taken its hold on devotees of winter sports, resulting in the development of the ice-cycle, which speeds over the frozen surfaces of ponds or rivers. The new ice vehicle is built from an ordinary bicycle. The front wheel is removed entirely, and the forks extended so that they almost touch the ice with the bicycle standing upright. A steel skate runner is attached to the extended front fork.

Two skate runners are similarly attached alongside the rear wheel. The cycle is pedalled as usual, the rubber tire gripping the ice. The skate runners prevent skidding, and balance can be maintained just as easily as on an ordinary bicycle.

Protect Yourself From Your Auto

By Walter E. Stewart

Many serious and painful accidents are caused through failure of autoists to become properly acquainted with their machines. Here are a few valuable tips.

HADLEY came to work the other morning with a badly blistered forearm. He went down to the first aid room to have it dressed. The doctor cut short his shamefaced explanation: “Yes, yes, I know. Your radiator froze up and when you removed the cap the steam shot out along your arm. You’re the sixth so far this morning.”

Aiming Radio Signals at the Moon

RADIO signals from the moon can be heard, asserts Dr. A. Hoyt Taylor of the Naval Research Laboratory at Washington, D. C. The plan is to direct a short wave radio beam at the moon in such a manner that it will be reflected by the moon’s surface to produce an “echo” wave, audible through powerful receivers on earth some three seconds after the 500,000-mile trip through inter-stellar space.

Giant Typewriter Weighs 14 Tons
A MAMMOTH typewriter—an exact duplicate of the smaller machine—standing eighteen feet high and weighing fourteen tons was recently placed on display in Atlantic City’s auditorium convention hall. The huge machine, shown in the photo below, is said to have cost $100,000 and required three years’ time in construction. All parts of the huge machine work just as in an office-size typewriter.

At last!

Stoplight Flashes Automobile Turn Signal on Pavement

AT LAST an automobile stoplight has been invented that will project its signals on the street behind in letters large enough to be easily read.

The French invention fulfills in all respects the “Needed Invention” in this field described in the September, 1933, issue of Modern Mechanix. A powerful electric bulb, a lens system, and lantern slides are combined to project lettering onto the street behind. Operation of the indicator may be controlled by the driver, or automatically by direct connection with steering wheel and brake pedal.

HENRY FORD Discusses America’s INDUSTRIAL FUTURE

In this exclusive interview Henry Ford predicts that the farm will be the scene of industrial development. He points the way to success for today’s inventors and looks upon chemistry as the link between a more prosperous agriculture and industry.

by GLENN F. JENKINS

HENRY FORD, the industrial genius of modern times, sees industry entering a vast, wide-open era of experiment, invention and discovery. He believes that in the next twenty-five years man will achieve results overshadowing the dreams of today.

This new trend has already begun under the stimulation of Henry Ford’s inventive mind. He is convinced that the farm will be the scene of great industrial development and that chemistry will be the agency by which these changes will be evolved.

Hips, Hips, Hips Away!

By MADAME SYLVIA

FASHION, like history, often repeats itself. Lately that mysterious group has been at it again. This time trying to sell American women the idea of bustles, peplums, flares, circular and barrel skirts. Fashion hasn’t got a chance with such goings-on. They tried once before, and not long ago, to stimulate interest in the hour-glass figure with spacious bosoms and billowy hips, but it was not a success. If your hips are already large, such fandangles as mentioned above will only attract attention to them and make them appear larger. And who wants that?

Chinese Junk Docks in New York after Two-Year Journey

What is believed to be the first real Chinese junk seen in New York, sailed into the harbor recently, manned only by the captain, his wife and their young son. Built by the captain himself, the strange craft carried its crew safely through all sorts of weather during the two years that were required to make the trip from China. Tied among the smart yachts, powerful tugs and steamers, the small vessel presented an odd sight.

Bicycle Wheeled Chariot Makes Sport of Mowing Lawns

LIVES there a small boy who has not at some time or other dreamed of riding behind the lawn mower, guiding it like a dictator instead of toilsomely pushing it through the tall grass which should have been cut a week ago?

The long awaited day has at last arrived. Attached like a chariot behind a power lawn mower is a comfortable two-wheeled cart for the driver. The whole affair can easily be made at home, and wherever there are large expanses of lawn which require the attention of a power motor, the chariot will save miles of walking.
