Skeleton Has Mechanical Bones

ALL honors for devising a novel way to attract trade go to a manufacturing concern in Hartford, Connecticut. The stunt they performed was the construction of an amazingly realistic skeleton from parts turned out at the plant. The creation is shown above. You will have to look closely to see that it does not have real bones.

Would You Have Beauty? (Aug, 1930)

Would You Have Beauty?

By Bernarr Macfadden

BEAUTY is supposed to be an invaluable possession.

Many girls, when they realize that they are beautiful, become slaves to the conventional methods of enhancing their charms.

They may have a complexion that is tinted with nature’s most enticing appeal; they may have lips that remind you of ripe cherries; their eyes may sparkle with the feminine lure that few men can resist.

Hydraulic Control OPENS Garage Door (Nov, 1931)

Hydraulic Control OPENS Garage Door

OPERATED from ordinary water pipes with pressure furnished by a simple pipe attachment, an inexpensive new device for opening and closing garage doors from the driver’s seat of the automobile proves a great convenience to motorists. It will open or close, lock or unlock garage doors without the driver’s leaving the machine.

A simple and easily-handled hydraulic device, consisting of two valves, one valve with lock and key, is placed in a convenient location on the edge of the driveway where it is within easy reach of the driver’s arm. The other valve is placed inside the garage. Either valve opens and closes the doors.

by A. Morton Smith

Charles Addams: Car-toonist (Mar, 1949)

Charles Addams: Car-toonist

THE day that Charles Addams drew the strange skiing cartoon at the left he became famous. That ski sketch even became a test for insanity—if you could see nothing wrong, the keeper had a nice padded place for you. But the day for Charlie was the one a year ago when Playwright Philip Barry gave him a beat-up Mercedes-Benz. Read the rest of this entry »

Sound Film Now Repeats Dialed Telephone Numbers (Aug, 1930)

Not quite sure why this requires such a huge speaker, or any speaker at all…

Sound Film Now Repeats Dialed Telephone Numbers

THE principal convenience of the dial telephone was that it enabled you to pick your own wrong numbers, but even this is done away with now by a sound film which repeats the number which you have just dialed and enables you to correct the mistakes which you may have made.

The new invention does not necessitate the use of the subscriber’s voice. The subscriber merely dials the number and that number is called to central as the sound film automatically repeats the number through a loud speaker. The new method is expected to be put in use before the end of the year. Read the rest of this entry »

Hard to argue with compelling evidence like that.

Martian Life May Exist on Earth
THAT kinds of life which originated elsewhere in the solar system not only have reached the earth in past ages but still are here in much the same forms as when they arrived is the opinion of a Viennese scientist. Striking evidence is supplied by the bacteria which live in salty, desert regions and develop red colors, like the prevailing red color of the planet Mars.

Flashes Stolen Car Warning

THE latest development in the war against automobile thieves is an electric appliance that flashes out the word “stolen” as soon as a thief attempts to turn on the ignition switch. The secret lies in a tiny locked box on the back of the dashboard. Connection is made with the ignition system, and unless the driver of the car adjusts the mechanism the letters blaze out.

The Truth About… Our Weather and the A-Bomb

Many people, including weathermen, are inclined to believe that the atomic blasts are the cause of the vicious tornadoes, hurricanes, wind and rain storms that have swept across our country. MI Editors asked Eric Sloane, noted meteorologist, for his opinion. Here’s what he has to say.

THERE’S little doubt about our changing climate. The fierce winters of yesterday are disappearing, tornadoes and hurricanes are becoming more vicious and weather trends aren’t trends” any more. They can’t be depended upon. Just about anything can happen—and does.
