THESE WASTE BASKETS TELL THEIR OWN STORY

Look around. Do your waste baskets show the normal accumulation of a busy, efficient work day or the story of wasted time, wasted effort, wasted supplies? MARMON 34 (Apr, 1918)

I’d never heard of the Marmon Car Company before seeing this ad. I really hope their catalog was called “The Book of Marmon”.

MARMON 34

Advanced Engineering

The new 4-Door Sedan is a practical family car for all seasons. In pleasant weather the lowered windows give the effect of an open car; when raised on stormy days, they shut out all discomforts. This serviceable model is in full accord with the utilitarian spirit of today.

STOP DRINKING DIRTY WATER (Nov, 1938)

“I can’t! It just tastes so good!”

I love how they can advertise how inexpensive it is, and also what a big money maker it will be for people selling it all in the same ad.

MOGUL EGYPTIAN CIGARETTES (Sep, 1915)

It’s a very pretty ad, but I’m not really getting the “Just like being in Cairo” vibe… Maybe they’re not talking about the one in Egypt. Perhaps it’s ones of these.

Top level meetings stay on the beam with Oasis coffee-breaks (Oct, 1961)

There is nothing “top level” people like more than instant coffee and instant “beverage”.

Coming from 1961, the SST model bears more than a little resemblance to the North American B-70 Valkyrie, a drawing of which had been released to the public the previous year. It should also be remembered that the Boeing and Lockheed designs weren’t even submitted to the FAA until about 4 years after this ad was written.

Quick coffee-breaks on the spot help keep your train of thought rolling to the right decision.

Oasis Hot ‘n Cold gives you the quickest and most efficient coffee-breaks possible. In one complete refreshment center, you have hot water for delicious instant coffee, chocolate or soups; cold water for zestful instant soft drinks. You just pour instant beverage into cup, add water and stir.

The People’s Telephone (Dec, 1924)

The People’s Telephone

The telephone knows no favorites. It does the bidding of the country store and of the city bank. It is found in the ranch house kitchen and in the drawing-room of the city mansion. Its wires penetrate the northern forest, stretch across the prairie, are tunneled under city streets.

WORK FOR UNCLE SAM (Jan, 1924)

Puerto Rico’s name was deliberately misspelled as “Porto Rico” by the US Government until 1932. The misspelling was in the Foraker Act of 1900 and the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

IBM AD – HOW TO FIND TIME TO THINK (Oct, 1961)

HOW TO FIND TIME TO THINK

MOST EXECUTIVES recognize the crucial, long-range problems that will affect the future growth of their companies. They know how to handle them, too. Their knottiest problem is to find the time to tackle them after grappling with a daily host of routine problems.

AN IBM MANAGEMENT OPERATING SYSTEM (MOS) can help you find the time. With this new management tool, you can program an IBM computer to collect and analyze business information and to initiate action on predictable questions involving inventory, reordering, shipping, production scheduling. The system will automatically print out exception reports when executive action is required.

NOW COPY on the GO! (Oct, 1961)

Rather than speculate Anken’s patent for a “Portable Photocopying Apparatus” may be found here. The Polaroid lawsuit I found against Anken involved trademark infringement over the name of one of their copy machines and had nothing to do with this portable copier.  Reading the patent apparently a sensitized sheet and the original are exposed to light and the exposed sheet goes through development and fixing. The fact that this copier came out shortly after Xerox began offering office machines using their dry process probably contributed to its disappearance.
