    I know that in Canada now, to protect existing poultry farmers, one needs a license to raise more than 400 chickens, or something like that.

    Perhaps this book is why Betty McDonald, in “The Egg and I”, talks about people in the 1920s being convinced that egg farming was an easy way to wealth and happiness. It wasn’t for her, which you can read about in the book.
